Sources have confirmed to Eurogamer that Nintendo’s NX will be a tablet which also doubles up as a traditional home console.
The NX is said to have two controllers (one on either side of the tablet) which detach when you want to convert from handheld gaming to console gaming to form two individual controllers useful for multiplayer gaming.
Processing wise, the NX is reported to be using Nividia’s Tegra X1 chip which has graphics performance somewhere between the PS3 and the PS4 (here is a cool video comparing the X1 to the PS4, but bear in mind this is only a tech demo so the graphics are in theory possible to achieve).
Tegra X1 Specs:
- 256 Core Maxwell GPU
- 8 CPU Cores (4x ARM Cortex A57 + 4x ARM Cortex A53)
- Capable of 60fps 4K video (H.265, H.264, VP9)
- Supports DirectX 12 and Unreal Engine 4 along with OpenGL 4.5 as well as OpenGL ES 3.1
So, according to the specs the NX is shaping up to be a very (very) powerful handheld device which offers innovative design, and also the return to cartridge gaming.
